Lovely Lip Liner

It hasn't been too long since I've started to try out lip liners, mainly because the bulk of lipsticks I used are not that demanding of one. But as always, my most turned to brand when it comes down to trying out something new is Essence. So when I finally thought it was time for me to delve into that lip liner hole (that sounds weird...), I thought I'd give their lipliners a whirl.

(06) satin mauve - (08) red blush - (15) honey berry
I picked up four shades; (06) satin mauve, a dusty mauvey - duh - pink, (08) red blush, a red that leans to the darker side, (15) honey berry, a dark, purple-y pink and (13) Transparant, which speaks for itself. I didn't swatch the last one because I think that would have been silly, since it really is transparant.

Let's talk about the normal lipliners first. They are smooth, not drying at all, create a great base for your lipstick and also prevent it from bleeding out of your lipline. Though they are not very longwearing (which they never claimed), I think they help the lipstick on top stick around, but if you eat or drink, re-application is necessary. I loved using the berry shade with my Catrice lipstick in Berry Bradshaw (reviewed here) and noticed that it really improved it's texture and wear. I do fill my lips in completely with the liners, but that's personal preference I think.

Now, about the odd one in the bunch. The transparant shade doesn't work as it's coloured brothers and sisters. At first I thought you just had to apply it as the other ones and put it on your lips, but then I read a post by ViviannaDoesMakeup were she talks about a transparant lipliner and she puts it outside of her lipline! It makes sense, because this way, you fill up the lines outside of your lipline and make sure your lipstick won't bleed into them. When I tried this technique with the essence one, it worked! It didn't feel weird at all and my lipstick stayed inside of the lines!

What I love to do with these products is to combine one coloured shade to prolong the wear of my lipstick (or just use it on its own) and put the transparant one on the outside for extra protection!

As you can tell, I'm once again blown away by the quality essence brings to the (extremely) affordable drugstore. Have you tried any of these lipliners? Any other recommendations?

  1. So interesting about the transparent liners. I would have filled my lips with it as well.
